About Sun City Meals on Wheels

History

Sun City Meals on Wheels has been providing nutritional meals to Sun City and Youngtown residents for more than 50 years.   In the fall of 1970, a group of four women realized there was a need for meals delivered to homes of people who were unable to prepare their own meals.

Sun City Meals on Wheels delivered the first 10 meals on May 1, 1971.  These first meals were prepared by the newly opened Boswell Hospital.

After establishing a meal delivery system, it was decided the organization would be an independent entity with no connections to either government or the National Meals on Wheels.  We established our own procedures and guidelines.  We have been a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization for fifty plus years. Recently we were designated as a Qualifying Charitable Organization (QCO).

Current Operations

Sun City Meals on Wheels delivers nutritious meals seven days a week, 365 days a year.  The only requirement is that you are a resident of Sun City or Youngtown.

Our service relies entirely on volunteers with the exception of two part time administrative staff.  We charge our clients only for the cost of the meals. A subsidy program exists to aid qualifying individuals. Business and operating expenses are funded by donations from local clubs, churches, synagogues and caring individuals.

The meals delivered consist of two meals; one hot meal and a sandwich with milk, fruit and dessert.

Meals are prepared by Life Stream and picked up by our volunteers for immediate delivery. We have a team of 180 volunteers that deliver 60 to 80 meals a day.
